Resizing without distorting the image
If the width and height you enter don't match the original's proportions, the image stretches or squashes. To keep it looking right, work out one dimension from the other using the original ratio — for a 4000 × 3000 photo (a 4:3 ratio) that you want 1200 wide, the height should be 900. If you need a different shape entirely (a square from a rectangle, say), crop the image to that shape first with the Crop Image tool, then resize.
Resizing to reduce file size
Pixel count is the biggest driver of image file size, so halving both dimensions roughly quarters the data. If your goal is a smaller file for email or an upload limit rather than a specific shape, resize to the largest size you'll actually display the image at, then run it through Compress Image for the final squeeze. Resizing first also means the compressor doesn't have to work as hard, so quality holds up better.
