Why HEIC files cause problems
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores a photo at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG at the same quality, which is why Apple made it the iOS default in 2017. The trade-off is reach: HEIC depends on the HEVC codec, which many websites, older versions of Windows, Android devices, and third-party apps either can't decode or handle inconsistently.
If you've uploaded an iPhone photo to a form and gotten a "file type not supported" error, seen a blank thumbnail, or had a colleague say the image won't open, HEIC is almost always the reason. Converting to JPG removes that dependency entirely.

Does converting lose quality?
There is one round of re-compression, because HEIC and JPG use different maths — but at ConvertBrio's default JPG quality the difference is not visible at normal viewing size or in a print. The photo's resolution (megapixel count) is unchanged. If you plan to edit the photo heavily afterward, convert to PNG with the Image Converter instead to avoid stacking a second lossy pass later.

Why won't my iPhone photo open on my computer?
It's probably saved as HEIC, Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. Many Windows PCs, Android phones, older apps, and websites don't support HEIC. Converting it to JPG with ConvertBrio makes it openable everywhere.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
