Scan to Word: Turn a Scanned Page Into an Editable Document
A scan or a photo of a page is a picture: you can't edit it. Scan to Word reads the text with optical character recognition (OCR) and builds a real Word document (DOCX) you can edit, format, and save.
Upload a photo of a page or a scanned PDF, choose the language, and download the DOCX. It's meant for getting text out of paper documents such as letters, contracts, and printed forms.
How to use this tool
- 1
Scan or photograph the page
Flat, well-lit, and straight gives the best result.
- 2
Upload the image or PDF
Images up to 100 MB, or PDFs up to 50 pages.
- 3
Choose the language
This helps the recognition read accents and special characters correctly.
- 4
Download the DOCX
Open it in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice, then proofread and edit.
What the Word file contains
The recognized text, split into paragraphs, with one page of the scan following another. It's an editable text document, not a copy of the page's look. Fonts, columns, images, and tables from the original are not reproduced.
Scan to Word vs. PDF to Word
PDF to Word is for PDFs that already contain real text, and it tries to keep formatting. Scan to Word is for pictures of text, where there is no text to convert until OCR reads it. If you can select words in your PDF, use PDF to Word instead.
Limitations
Accuracy depends on the scan. Handwriting, low-resolution or skewed scans, faint print, and complex layouts such as tables and columns are often recognized poorly. Expect to proofread every document. If the tool finds no readable text, it tells you instead of returning an empty file.
Privacy
Uploads are encrypted in transit, processed automatically with no human review, and deleted within about 24 hours.
